I’m Breaking Up With My Pillow


My pillow and I have a complicated relationship. Some nights it feels supportive and comfortable, helping me drift off into a peaceful sleep. Other nights, I wake up with a headache, a stiff neck, shoulder pain, and the feeling that I spent the entire night wrestling an alligator.


Lately, I’ve started wondering if it’s time for a breakup.


That thought first really hit me after a recent two-week vacation. During that time, I slept on everything except my own pillow—guest room pillows, hotel pillows, cruise ship pillows. Surprisingly, I slept great. No morning headaches. No constant fluffing. No waking up wondering what happened to my neck overnight.


Then I came home.


The first night back, the headaches returned.


That’s when I really started asking the question: was my pillow the problem all along?

Convinced it might be, I did what any reasonable person would do—I went pillow shopping.

Within three days, I had learned more than I ever wanted to know about loft, fill materials, sleep positions, and cervical support. I was basically one step away from a minor degree in pillow science.


Why Your Pillow Matters

While many factors can affect sleep quality, neck pain, and headaches, your pillow may play a bigger role than most people realize. We spend roughly one-third of our lives sleeping. During that time, your pillow plays a key role in supporting the natural alignment of your head, neck, and spine.


When a pillow is too flat, your head can drop downward, placing stress on the muscles and joints of the neck. When a pillow is too thick, your head may be pushed upward, which creates strain on the neck and shoulders.


Either situation can contribute to:

  • Morning headaches

  • Neck pain and stiffness

  • Shoulder discomfort

  • Numbness or tingling in the arms

  • Poor sleep quality

  • Increased muscle tension


One Pillow Does Not Fit Everyone

The "best" pillow depends on how you sleep.


Side Sleepers

Side sleepers generally need a thicker pillow that fills the space between the shoulder and the head while keeping the neck aligned.


Back Sleepers

Back sleepers often do best with a medium-height pillow that supports the natural curve of the neck without pushing the head too far forward.


Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleeping places significant stress on the neck because the head stays turned for long periods. A very thin pillow—or working toward a different sleep position—may help reduce strain.

Some people also find a body pillow helpful. Hugging it can recreate that “comfort of stomach sleeping” while gently encouraging the body to shift toward a side-lying position, which is much easier on the neck.


From a chiropractic perspective, when the joints and muscles of the neck and upper back are already under tension, those prolonged positions overnight can be enough to trigger morning stiffness, headaches, or shoulder discomfort.


When Your Pillow May Be Trying to Tell You Something

If you consistently wake up with:

  • Headaches

  • Neck stiffness

  • Shoulder pain

  • Frequent tossing and turning

  • Pain that improves as the day goes on


your pillow may be part of the problem.


The Pillow Test

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is your pillow more than 1–2 years old?

  • Does it stay flattened after you fold it?

  • Do you wake up with pain that improves later in the day?

  • Do you constantly adjust your pillow during the night?

  • Do you sleep better somewhere other than your own bed?


If you answered yes to several of these questions, it may be time to re-evaluate your pillow.


Don't Forget the Neck

Even the perfect pillow can't overcome underlying tension, poor posture, stress, or restricted movement in the neck and upper back. When the joints and muscles in the neck aren't functioning properly, they can contribute to headaches, stiffness, shoulder tension, and disrupted sleep.


The Bottom Line

Finding the right pillow can sometimes feel like dating. What seems perfect at first may not be the right fit long-term.


If you're waking up with headaches, neck pain, or stiffness, don't automatically assume it's just part of getting older. Your pillow, sleeping position, and spinal health may all be contributing factors.


And if you're currently on pillow number four and still searching for "the one," know that you're not alone. Some relationships simply aren't meant to last.
