Red Light Therapy: Why the Right Dose Matters

In our previous article, Red Light Therapy 101, we covered the basics of photobiomodulation—wavelengths, irradiance, treatment area, distance, and treatment time. Now let's take it a step further. Because there's another important piece of the puzzle when it comes to red light therapy:
Dose.
And when it comes to photobiomodulation, more isn't necessarily better.
The Goldilocks Principle of Red Light Therapy
Photobiomodulation has what researchers call a biphasic dose-response. That sounds complicated, but the basic idea is pretty simple: there can be a “just right” amount of light. Too little may not produce much of a biological response. An appropriate dose may stimulate a desired response. But increasing the dose beyond that point doesn't necessarily mean greater benefits—and in some circumstances, a higher dose may actually produce a smaller response.
The goal isn't simply more light. The goal is the right dose.
So What Does Red Light Have to Do With Your Mitochondria?
Here's where things get really interesting. Imagine that every cell in your body is like a tiny city. A lot is happening inside that city, and all of it needs energy to keep things running. Your mitochondria are like the power plants of those tiny cities. They help produce ATP—the usable energy that cells need to carry out their jobs.
So where does red light come in? Researchers are studying how red and near-infrared light interacts with the cellular machinery involved in energy production. One area of particular interest is an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase, which plays an important role in the mitochondrial energy-production process. You don't have to remember that name. The important part is this:
Red and near-infrared light is being studied for how it interacts with what's happening inside your cells—not just on the surface of your skin.
And that is one of the reasons photobiomodulation is so interesting. But remember our Goldilocks principle? If we're trying to influence what's happening inside the cell, that doesn't mean we should simply flood the body with as much light as possible.
The amount matters.

Why We Chose the PlatinumLED BIOMAX PRO ULTRA
At Perfect Alignment Chiropractic, we wanted a system designed for professional, full-body photobiomodulation. The PlatinumLED BIOMAX PRO ULTRA is an FDA Class II registered medical device, and its output has undergone complete, certified third-party testing by LightLab International, an accredited lighting-industry testing laboratory. For us, that's important because if dose matters, we want to know what our equipment is actually delivering.
Why the BIOMAX PRO ULTRA?
Our system features:
Four 12" × 36" panels for full-body treatment
Multiple wavelengths of red and near-infrared light
Zero-gap panel design
Individual wavelength controls
Adjustable panel height with a motorized stand
Comfortable massage table for treatment
Together, these features give us the flexibility to provide professional full-body treatment that is individualized for each patient.
A Personalized Approach to Red Light Therapy
At Perfect Alignment Chiropractic, red light therapy begins with understanding what you're hoping to accomplish. Whether your goal is supporting recovery, skin health, healthy aging, overall wellness, or another wellness goal, Dr. Eddie reviews your goals and develops an appropriate treatment approach. That includes determining the appropriate light settings, treatment time, positioning, and frequency for your individual plan.
The goal isn't simply to turn on the lights. It's to use the technology thoughtfully, with the dose and treatment approach in mind.
The Bottom Line
Red light therapy isn't about getting as much light as possible. It's about understanding how light interacts with the body and delivering an appropriate dose. That's why we chose the BIOMAX PRO ULTRA—and why we take an individualized approach to every patient's treatment plan.
The technology matters. The dose matters. And the treatment approach matters.
