Red Light Therapy Safety: What You Should Know

Red light therapy is everywhere right now. You can find red light panels, masks, blankets, beds, and other devices online and at retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Ulta Beauty, and even your local sporting goods store. But here's the thing: not every red light device or treatment approach is the same. With red light therapy, dose matters. The equipment you use, the distance from the body, the treatment time, and how frequently you use it all matter, too.

For most healthy adults, red and near-infrared light are generally considered low risk when the device is properly engineered and treatment stays within appropriate boundaries for distance, dose, and frequency. That's why we believe it's important to understand not just whether you're using red light therapy, but how you're using it.

What Makes a Red Light Therapy System Safer?

We chose the PlatinumLED BIOMAX PRO ULTRA because we wanted a system designed for professional use, with features that allow treatment to be controlled and adjusted.

Our system includes:

  • Verified output

  • Stable power delivery

  • Multiple wavelengths

  • Individual wavelength controls

  • Certified third-party output testing

  • Adjustable panel height

  • FDA Class II medical device

Using a medical-grade device with certified third-party output testing gives us greater confidence that the system is delivering the intended wavelengths and output consistently.

Start Low and Go Slow

Even if you've used red light therapy before, every device is different. Output, wavelengths, treatment area, and other characteristics can vary significantly from one device to another. The BIOMAX PRO ULTRA is a high-output professional system, so we take a conservative approach when beginning treatment. We start with an appropriate distance and treatment time, then gradually adjust the treatment as needed based on your goals and individual response.

The goal is to find the right dose—not the maximum dose.

Eye Safety Matters

Red and near-infrared light therapy does emit UV light, but the brightness and intensity of a high-output panel can still be uncomfortable for the eyes. For that reason, eye protection is an important part of every treatment at Perfect Alignment Chiropractic.

  • Protective goggles are provided for every session.

  • We ask patients to wear the provided goggles throughout treatment.

  • Never stare directly into the illuminated LEDs at close range.

The goggles are there to make your treatment more comfortable and to provide an added layer of protection while you're receiving treatment.

What Might You Notice?

Most people find red light therapy comfortable. Some people may notice temporary:

  • Warmth or gentle heat

  • Mild redness

  • Slight dryness or tightness

  • A little tingling

  • Occasionally, a headache or fatigue

These effects are generally mild and temporary if they occur. If something feels uncomfortable or persists, let us know. Your treatment parameters can be reassessed rather than simply pushing through it.

What Are the Less Common Risks?

Problems are more likely when treatment is too intense, too frequent, or when other factors aren't taken into consideration. For example, skin irritation may occur if someone receives too much exposure or stacks multiple treatments without adequate recovery. Certain medications and topical products can also increase photosensitivity.

That's one reason we ask about your health history, medications, and treatment goals before beginning.

When Should You Talk With Your Healthcare Provider?

Red light therapy is generally low risk, but there are situations where you should talk with your healthcare provider before beginning treatment.

These include:

  • Photosensitive conditions

  • Light-triggered migraines or a history of seizures

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • A history of cancer or active cancer treatment

  • Medications known to increase photosensitivity

  • A condition, medication, or other health concern you're unsure about

The Bottom Line

Red light therapy is generally considered low risk when appropriate equipment is used correctly and treatment stays within appropriate boundaries. At Perfect Alignment Chiropractic, safety starts with the equipment we choose and continues with how we use it. We consider your goals, health history, and individual circumstances when developing your treatment approach—and we start conservatively rather than assuming more is better.

The goal isn't simply to use red light. It's to use it thoughtfully.
